According to a popular account that emerged in the 19th century, Philomena was a Greek princess, who vowed her virginity to Christ. When the Roman Emperor Diocletian sought her hand in marriage, she refused. As a result, she faced various forms of torture including scourging, arrows, and drowning, but was miraculously saved each time through divine intervention until her final martyrdom.
After her relics were enshrined in the church in Mugnano del Cardinale, Italy, many miracles were reported. Healings and answered prayers spread her fame, leading to a widespread devotion.
